Thespis - Range Analysis

According to the Durham Savoyards version:
     Words by W. S. Gilbert
     Music by Alan Riley Jones
(and Arthur Sullivan)

Summary by Role

Roles in this summary table are listed in highest to lowest order.
White notes required, black notes optional. Pitches doubled by chorus are ignored.

NOTE: In Gilbert and Sullivan's original 1871 Thespis, the roles of
Sparkeion, Mercury, and Cymon were portrayed by women.

Productions wishing to honor this precedent using the Jones version may do so as follows:

Sparkeion, written for tenor, may be sung by a soprano up an octave.

Mercury, written for a comic (patter) baritone, may be sung by a mezzo-soprano up an octave.

Cymon, along with the other non-singing roles, may be cast regardless of gender or singing range.
